OsteopathyThe Osteopathic philosophy is that “structure governs function.”
This simply means that if the structure of the body is not optimal, the function of the body is likely to be affected through dysfunction of the nerves, blood supply, lymphatic and venous system which will then affect the function of glands, organs and muscle tissue. Osteopaths view the body as a single, integrated unit and understand that restriction in any joints or muscles can cause disturbances that affect the body as a whole. The goal of an Osteopath is to address the underlying cause of a patient’s symptoms and to help resolve the issue. It is important to point out that there may be areas within the body that are contributing to a major dysfunction but are not currently painful. For example, a restriction in the pelvis has the ability to set off a chain reaction within the body resulting in frequent, unresolvable neck pain and headaches. During consultation, our Osteopath begins by taking a full health history followed by a ‘head to toe’ assessment to identify which area of the body requires treatment. Gentle hands-on techniques to address mechanical dysfunctions include fascial / soft tissue release, muscle energy and cranio-sacral therapy. Common conditions that can be addressed through Osteopathy are headaches, back pain, neck pain, RSI, stress, anxiety and sports injuries. Most health funds provide rebates for Osteopathic treatment.
