The B vitamins are a group of vitamins that are commonly found together in foods and often share similar functions as co-enzymes for various processes within the body.
B vitamins play a critical role in:
- The production of energy within cells.
- The metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids and fats.
- Immune and nervous system function.
- Healthy cell growth and division.
Deficiency of vitamin B may occur from chronic disease, inadequate diet, alcoholism, gastrointestinal problems and in the elderly. Deficiencies of several of the B vitamins are associated with severe neurological and dermatological disorders.
