Chelation Therapy

The word chelation comes from the Greek word chele which means the claw of a crab or lobster.  Chelation Therapy is is the process of introducing a chelating substance into the body that "grabs' onto toxins and waste so they can be safely eliminated from the body in the urine and feces.

Different chelating agents are used to "bind" different substances.  Substances that can be sucessfully chelated range from heavy metal residues (cadmium, arsenic, lead, aluminium, mercury, copper) to various toxins and metabolic wastes.

Heavy metal toxicity alone has been widely linked to behavioural and neurological conditions like ADHD, Autism, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s.

Toxins and heavy metals interfere with the body’s natural chemical reactions and may contirbute to an increase the production of free radicals which may accelerate ageing and the risk of developing cancer and heart disease. Helping the body remove these toxins can be an effective way to improve cellular function.

Chelation therapy can be considered for:

  • Coronary artery disease.
  • Cerebral vascular disease.
  • Peripheral vascular disease.
  • Angina.
  • Vertigo.
  • Tinnitus.
  • Senility.
  • Auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Heavy metal toxicity.

Improvements linked to Chelation Therapy:

  • Coronary heart disease symptoms.
  • Peripheral vascular disease symptoms.
  • Exercise ability.
  • Skin texture and tone.
  • Sense of well-being.
  • Sexual function.
  • Memory.
  • Hair colour.

Patients have also reported reduced:

  • Blood pressure.
  • Parkinson’s symptoms.
  • Liver spots and fine lines.
  • Senility and alzheimer’s symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

A consultation with our Medical Doctor, who has undertaken specialised training in Chelation Therapy therapy with ACNEM is required to evaulate whether Chelation would be a suitable treatment for you.

All other details are discussed in consultation as to frequency and type of chelating agent that may be recommended for your specific needs.

What to expect during a treatment:

If you are eligible for chelation therapy, the treatment may be administered intravenously or orally.

Two types of intravenous chelating agents are offered at Levity, EDTA and DMPS:

  • EDTA is a chelating agent that is combined with magnesium, vitamin C and B vitamins and is commonly used to treat cardiovascular disease and lead toxicity.  It is achieved through intravenous drip over approximately 1.5 to 3 hours.  Anywhere between 5 and 30 sessions may be recommended depending on the type and severity of your condition.   EDTA can be administered up to 2x / wk.
  • DMPS is a chelating agent that is used to treat heavy metal toxicity (except lead) and is administered intravenously over approximately 10-15 minutes 1x / month.

Oral forms of chelation may be achieved with prescribed substances such as DMSA, or herbal substances such as chlorella or coriander extract, or a combination of both.

Dietary and lifestyle changes will be prescribed along with nutritional supplementation to augment the results of any form of chelation therapy to ensure long term health and disease prevention.

Is intravenous Chelation Therapy safe?

All intravenous treatments are carried out by fully qualified staff. The highest standards of hygiene and safety are maintained and all equipment is discarded after use. All patients are supervised during treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Mild side effects which may be experienced include minor discomfort at the site where the needle enters the vein, slight dizziness, mild headache, low blood sugar, skin flushes or increased thirst.  These side effects are usually more pronoucned on the first and second treatments and subside with subsequent visits.

You may experience flu-like symptoms or tiredness for a day or two after treatment; it is a sign that your body is in the process of detoxifcation.

It is important to eat a meal prior to treatment and possibly bring some snacks to ensure your blood sugar does not drop during the session.

How much does Chelation Therapy cost?

The cost of Chelation Therapy depends on various factors such as the type of chelating agent used and the method of administration. All costs are discussed during consultation. Medicare and private health funds do not offer rebates for Chelation Therapy.
