Alpha-lipoic acid functions as an essential co-factor in reactions involved with energy utilisation. It has potent antioxidant activity inside and outside cells in four distinct ways:
- Scavenging free radicals.
- Regenerationg cellular antioxidants such as glutathione and vitamins C and E.
- Chelates (attaches to) heavy metals.
- Repairs oxidised (damaged) proteins.
